FOR THE LOVE OF WILDLIFE
We are delighted to announce that the Renewable Energy Cup event has chosen to support For the Love of Wildlife Ltd as the recipient of the inaugural event.
For the Love of Wildlife (FLOW) is an Australian grass roots NGO known to punch way above its weight when it comes to driving change on behalf of the world's iconic and majestic species.
In 2015, FLOW created a global first when Australia banned the importation of lion trophies and body parts, a direct response to the cruel and barbaric industry of captive breeding and canned hunting. This was followed by France and the Netherlands, with the US implementing strict import laws - a major blow against the industry breeding lions for the bullet. Australia's ban was implemented before the death of Cecil, the lion shot by US dentist Walter Palmer. FLOW is the Australian partner for the multi-award documentary Blood Lions.
FLOW has since worked collaboratively in addressing the unregulated domestic trade in ivory and rhino horn, hosting Australia's first ivory and rhino horn destruction event in Melbourne in 2017 on World Wildlife Day, which gained international media and triggered a Parliamentary Inquiry, resulting in a recommendation for a full domestic trade ban.
Currently FLOW is working internationally, calling for a comprehensive review of the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species. With more than 36,000 species listed for trade regulations, this convention hasn't been reviewed in 25 years - allowing endangered wildlife to be traded into extinction and illegal wildlife to be laundered through the existing markets.
